I'm going to Cuba to dance. I wanted to find out more about Salsa and Bachata and learn more about this dance style in the home of dance. But I not only encountered these dances there but also learned more about other dances from Central and South America.
My perspective on salsa has completely changed. The soul of this dance is understood much better through this journey. The relationship with African and Creole dances but also dancehall was an enriching experience. I experienced salsa and dance there in all its facets and was able to bring new steps and movements with me to my dance school in Germany.
Our 1 month trip through Cuba began with Havana, where we lived in a local apartment among locals for 2 weeks. I have to say, feeding myself wasn't easy. Corona made the situation in Cuba worse and the food shops were constantly empty and there were long queues in front of them. Cheap and quick food is available on the street in small kiosks or sold from apartments. The quality is ok and you can survive with it. There are countless salsa bars with live music in Old Havana. Here it is advisable to just let yourself go and wander through the streets and bars. Of course, a visit to La Floridita should not be missed. The live music there was extremely good. This is also known
From Havana we went on a trip to Vinales with breathtaking nature. We were able to eat with locals and it was really tasty and the conversations were interesting. A visit to a cigar tobacco plantation with a horseback ride is of course part of Vinales and we didn't miss it either
We continued to Varadero, a pearl of the Caribbean and the most beautiful beach in Cuba with many hotels and probably the most famous holiday resort in Cuba. the Blau is a well-run all-inclusive hotel for Cuba. Of course you can't compare the standard of all inclusive in Cuba with other places in the world. For Cuba the selection was quite large but of course something is off here and there and there is only white wine or red wine and not always both. The fitness studio in the blue is very large but is 1990s style, which gives the whole thing a nice training flair.
From Varadero we first went back to Havana and then on to Trinidad the Cubain Memory de Trindad. A lovely hotel with a great, colorful design right by the sea. The hotel is very local. This means that it primarily accommodates local tourists who also like to celebrate their birthday there with the whole family. The food is very good but also absolutely local and not international. What really spoiled the stay were small mosquitoes named Jenjen. I had over 80 stitches which was too much for my body and I became ill. We decided to leave Trinidad earlier than planned and went back to Varadero to spend Christmas there, where we were able to test two more beautiful hotels. The Paradisus Princesa del Mar Resort & Spa and our favorite the Hotel Royalton Hicacos. Of all four hotels we were able to test in Cuba, this is our winner.
We were lucky enough to meet a Cuban dance group and gain some experience. I have to say life as a dancer is not easy in Cuba. The local dancers don't even get free drinks in the hotels and there is a lack of dance clothes, fabrics and shoes. The costumes are old and worn and mostly homemade.
